It’s time to make some Holiday Drinks!
I had an ambitious plan to do a 12 Days of Drinksmas roundup this year, but then things entirely got away from me (as they always do in December). Thankfully, I received some gorgeous glassware from notNeutral that made me slow down and say, “Woah!”
Founded by the award-winning multidisciplinary design firm Rios Clementi Hale Studios, notNeutral creates bold, idea-based, accessible objects for the everyday modern lifestyle. Blurring the boundaries between the figural and abstract, and the decorative and functional, the pieces we design are durable, playful, and imbued with a clever take on the ordinary that is unquestionably not neutral.
notNeutral has had storefronts in Los Angeles for almost as long as I’ve lived here in SoCal– their store in Larchmont village was where I would go and ogle beautifully modern/classic designs for years, but now they also have outposts in Palm Springs and the newest in Pasadena.
The CICLONE glassware is and offshoot of their award-winning LINO coffee collection. Made of featherlight borosilicate glass, a lightweight laboratory-grade glass that is heat- and scratch-resistant. The shapes, as you can see, are curvaceous and easy to hold– and the double-walled design makes the glasses comfortable to grasp when serving hot or cold beverages.
The CICLONE name comes from the constantly spinning motion of a lathe, while the glassware’s eye-catching silhouettes evoke a candlestick or baluster whose moldings are shaped specifically to fit the hand.
There are three different sizes for the glasses: demitasse (holding 2.5 oz), tumbler (holding 6oz) and cooler (holding 10oz). These are PERFECT for all sorts of holiday drinks!
In the demitasse above, I made a riff on a poinsettia cocktail– it’s 1 oz Tito’s vodka, 1/2 oz Pama liqueur, and 1/2 oz triple sec. Shake the ingredients over ice and strain, and serve with an orange peel garnish.
For the cooler, I decided to try spiking some hot chocolate! Because there’s nothing better than HOT holiday drinks, right?
I recommend making your hot chocolate in a separate vessel (don’t microwave the CICLONE), and then pouring it into your glassware.
For one round of hot chocolate, I spiked it with peppermint schnapps and served with a candy cane garnish.
For the second round, I went with my favorite addition to hot winter beverages:
Just one ounce of Disaronno or other amaretto will and a fragrant, sweet kick to your hot chocolate. And holiday drinks should always be a little sweet, no?
The CICLONE barware is packaged in boxes of two, and range from $21-28 per set. I think they’d also make perfect and festive gifts for New Year’s Eve hostess gifts!
