Meatless Monday: The Perfect Veggie Burger

I’ve been a vegetarian for about ten years now, and I’ve eaten pretty much ever veggie burger on the face of the planet.

While some are fine (Boca’s various iterations are passable, sometimes even delicious), some are awful (why is Morningstar so wretched?), I have to say it:

If you have either of those two in your freezer… well, don’t throw them away, because that’s wasting food. But consume them and then pick up Gardein burgers.

Gardein is a whole vast array of vegetable-protein replacements. I’ve written about them quite often. Chickenless pot pie, Meatless shepherd’s pie, or just a basic salad.

But you can’t get any better than having one of these burgers on this:

Freshly baked wheat hamburger buns, smothered in fresh veggies.

A bed of organic greens, veggie burger, avocado, tomato, onions and veganaise. Yum yum yum yum.

Without a doubt, the Gardein burgers are the best on the market. I can’t exactly pinpoint why– to me, they’re the juiciest burger on the market, without any weird aftertaste. It holds together nicely, and doesn’t try to taste like a real burger.

  1. Ha, I’m loving your “excited about bread” photo :)

Now I’m no longer vegetarian, but I actually like the Morningstar spicy black bean burgers. Maybe I haven’t eaten enough of them yet to dislike them, though. I also am partial to their spicy chick’n patties.

Jenn at Peas & Crayons posted what looks like a totally delicious veggie burger recipe today, just FYI. I’m going to try it. But I’ll also try this Gardein brand – hadn’t ever heard of them!

  2. I am an omnivore, but eat mostly vegetarian for breakfast and lunches (two small meals during the day – I feel like a rabbit with all the veggies I eat during the day), but for dinner all bets are off and I will often have meat. With breakfast, I have two Morningstar “sausage” patties. I LOVE Morningstar’s Spicy Black Bean burger. I also have Gardenburgers in the freezer. You’d think with all those “veggie” options that I’m a vegetarian, but it’s more because I try to only have red meat no more than twice a week. I can’t eat much seafood due to allergies, which is really unfortunate because I LOVE seafood. I get sick of chicken… hence all my veggie options.

My best meal this past weekend would have been last night’s steak dinner, but I didn’t get it made – that’s tonight’s menu; like I said I’m an omnivore. Saturday’s mean sucked and last night ended up being popcorn and homemade whipped cream with berries. I’ll see if I can find a small package of the Gardein. Thanks for the suggestion!

  3. we get the WEIRDEST array of veggie products in our grocery stores. before i moved to LA, i thought this was the land of weird diets, and companies that bent to accommodate us. i’ve never seen those black bean burgers– have to hunt them down!
