The Thing You Can’t Live Without

While making my oatmeal cookies this past weekend, David and I waxed on about how incredibly happy we are to have our KitchenAid stand mixer.

My dad got me my mixer for my 21st birthday, one of the first times he came to visit me in California.  It was a total surprise, and I’ve happily lugged it to every apartment I’ve lived in since.  (Ok, for a while, it lived in the back seat of my Scion xA, because I lived in a fourth floor walk-up with street parking, and I never had the energy to schlep it a few blocks to my building, and then up four flights of stairs.  I was the only person working at a PR firm with a heavy-duty kitchen implement as my passenger, that’s for certain.)

While I’m sure I could give up my #firstworldproblems and yes, actually live without my stand mixer, I would generally prefer not to.

Forget to soften butter for cookies?  Toss it in the stand mixer, and the motor does the work.  Want some fancy pasta? Well, there’s an extruder attachment for that.  Ice cream? No extra appliance needed, just the nifty bowl and some patience.

I say it’s the thing that I can’t live without because David and my family are people, and I consider my dogs to be people, too!

Which leads me to wonder– what’s the thing you can’t live without?

  1. I got a Kitchen Aid mixer for my 22nd birthday. I love it! I grew up in a household with a Kitchen Aid and my college years without a stand mixer in my college apartment were sad days indeed. So sad in fact, that my mother had had enough of my griping by my senior year and bought me that above mentioned mixer which I now use nearly every day. While I can imagine life without the mixer, I don’t like what I see when I do that. ;)

  2. Oh my Kitchen Aid is WAY on the top of my list of things I can’t live without. I think lately it might be getting beat out by my iPad. I feel like such a techie dork saying that, but I just LOVE my iPad and since I can carry it everywhere and use it all the time, it seems to have it beat.
